How to win the day with 3 simple morning routines

morning routines for the business owner

What is your routine when you wake up?  I mean, right when you wake up?  What is the very first thing that you do?

Do you grab your phone and start scrolling through Facebook or Twitter?  Do you jump right to your emails and see what came through while you were sleeping?

Maybe your routine is different.  Maybe you wake up and watch the news and catch up on all of the drama and newsworthy events of the day.  Or maybe you grab a cup of coffee and scroll through the internet or read the newspaper.  If you a parent with kids at home, your morning may not look like that at all.  Maybe your day begins with a frantic scramble to get kids showered, fed, and out the door for school.  Preferably with both shoes on!

Can you relate?  Most of us can!

There is a better way.  But first, a definition is in order:

Routine:  Something you do everyday without fail, so that eventually, you do it without conscious thought.

We all have one.  But is it setting us up for success?  If not, try these:

Have a plan.

I know it sounds simplistic but don’t knock it until you try it!  Simply having a written plan the night before can take away so much of the mental stress we feel just by starting your day on the right foot.  For many us, we’re flying by the seat of our pants and always feeling like we’re trying to catch our breath.  Write down what needs to get done before the day begins.  Then, prioritize it so that no matter what happens you will feel great and accomplish what most needed to get done.

Spend 15-20 minutes to yourself.

This may mean you have to set your alarm to get up before the crazy hits.  But it will be worth it!  I like to read my bible before I do anything else.  This may not be your thing, but find something for you that is inspiring, hopeful, good, and uplifting.  Let’s face it, Facebook is NOT that!  Instead, watch YouTube channels with great teachers or inspirational messages.  Find and listen to people who encourage you.  For some, it is simply about sitting there quietly and just praying or settling your mind and thoughts.  Whatever it is that works for you, be sure to do it before you do anything else!

Turn your car into your classroom.

Brian Tracy suggests that if you don’t have time to spend that 15-20 minutes at home right away, that it doesn’t mean you are out of options.  This is one of the best things that I have learned to do.  If you have to get on the road first thing in the morning, turn off the radio!  Instead of listening to talk radio or music on your drive, get on YouTube and listen to an inspiring messages through your phone or vehicle instead.  This small change, with a daily commute, can add up to hours and hours of training and will help you to set your mind on things that are good, right, true, and helpful to your personal development and – ultimately – to growing your business.
