Here’s how most conversations go when you meet someone new:
“Hi! So nice to meet you. So… what do you do for a living?” (0ther person) “I work at (__fill in the blank__). Its not bad. I like it okay. Its not a dream job, but I make $_____/hour. So that’s not bad.”
You’ve been in that conversation before, right? The famous greeting we all share where you state your name and tell what you do and then go on to explain that it isn’t all that exciting but (as if you didn’t know this next part) “its just a job.”
And there’s the problem. Did you catch it?
“Its not bad“. It’s “okay“. “It’s just a job“.
As an employer, do you think it is difficult to find people who are okay with status quo and are willing to do work they don’t love simply because it pays them a check? Absolutely not! These people are everywhere! It’s called “normal”, “average”, “ordinary”.
With that in mind, let me ask you: If you go back to the conversation above and fill in the blank for what this person makes per hour, what would guess it could be?
$50/hour? How about $100/hour? Think it would be more than that?! Neither do I. Here’s why…
You and I don’t actually make anything “per hour”. You realize that, right? Test it out sometime and see. Take a week off of work (unannounced) and see if the paychecks keep rolling in. If you do this unannounced you may get to test this theory for a while longer as your boss will likely ask you to stay home the rest of the year as well! If you got paid per hour, you’d still make money and life would be amazing! Right? You’d come and go as you like and get paid no matter what your attitude or effort.
But, as the hilarious commercial says, “That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works!”
Paid For Value
We don’t get paid by the hour. We get paid by the value that we bring to the job we do during the hours we actually work. For example, let’s say that you work at a surgeon’s office. Surgeons make a lot of money. Do their secretaries make the same “per hour” as the surgeon? Of course not! Why? Because even though the two people may work the same hours, they bring a different value to the job during those hours worked.
The value of the two people in this illustration is not based on who they are in terms of intrinsic value and whether God loves one more than the other. That’s a different valuation completely! This is not about human worth and dignity. This is simply a matter of pure economics. And when it comes to the marketplace, you get paid based on the value that you bring during the hours that you work.
But this is where it gets very exciting! Especially if you are like me and work from home or in direct sales. The reason many of us choose this type of work, in part at least, is because there are no limits on the amount of money we can make. But what you find out quickly in this type of business is that there truly is no “per hour” wages. That’s not how this works! To make it big, change your future, and reach your goals you have to bring more value into your business.
While we get this point intellectually, many of us fail to make the connection and do the one that makes your income grow: become more valuable! Do you want to make money like some of the people in your industry who have changed their lives and their futures in massive ways? Then you must become something more than you currently are! You must bring value to the marketplace that justifies such a changed life. This is where it all starts.
Ask yourself this important question: If you were to pay someone else to do exactly what you did this past week in your business, what would you pay them if they did what you did?
Of course you want to make $100/hour, $100,000/month, take vacations every 3 months. We all do! But let’s be honest here (heck, its just us anyways!). How much value have you brought with you? More importantly (and certainly more encouragingly), could you become more valuable? Is it possible? Of course it is!
You don’t get to dictate income. But you can become valuable enough to deserve it. That’s the truth of the matter. You have the opportunity to become anything you’d like.
The choice is yours.
