Follow the Leader

5 Leaders You Should Follow

Do you remember when you were a kid and you used to play the game, ‘Follow the Leader’?  That was a great game!  Everyone would take turns directing their friends to do whatever they did.  If they walked in a zig-zag, so did you.  If they jumped up and down, you would too.  Whatever the leader did, you followed it up by doing the exact same thing.

5 Leaders to Follow

I want to help you play the game again.  But this time, as adults who are trying to thrive in every area of their lives.

Here’s how it works:

I will give you 5 people who I like to follow and mimic.  These are leaders who specialize in specific areas of life or business that, I believe, can help you thrive in your business and life.

The idea is simple:  watch what they do and how they do it, and then do the same.  That’s it!

But before I share who these people are and why you may be interested in following them, I want to share this quote from Jim Rohn.  I hope this will help encourage you to consider carefully who you follow.  Here’s what he said:

“You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Think about that.  You are already playing ‘Follow the Leader’ but you may not have even realized it!  You think, talk, act, and become like those you surround yourself with.  Who you follow makes a HUGE difference in the direction and quality of your life.

So, let’s look at five people who may be worth following.

5 People to Follow

1. Michael Hyatt

Michael is my mentor.  The funny thing is, we’ve never met or talked in person.  That’s because he is a virtual mentor and coach.  I have a ton of respect and admiration for Michael and love how he approaches life and business.  His motto is: “Win at Business.  Succeed at Life.”  I love that!  Michael should be flattered with me because I am absolutely copying and mimicking him and his online approach every day.  If you’re looking for a place for great ideas and support in your life or business, Michael is a great leader to follow!  www.michaelhyatt.com  His book, Living Forward, is amazing as well!  If you’re trying to create a roadmap for the future that you prefer, then I highly recommend that you check it out.

2. Kim Garst

Kim is someone that I found, no surprise, through Michael’s suggestion.  She is a leader in the social media sphere and has all sorts of great materials and information for those of you looking to make an impact (and who isn’t!?) with social media.  She is the founder of Boom! Social, and is a great leader to follow if you’re looking to grow your brand or social media presence.  www.kimgarst.com

3.  Darren Hardy

I had never heard of Darren until a leader in our business (who I have a ton of respect for and has been instrumental in our success) had mentioned that he was one of her favorites.  I am glad I discovered who he was!  Darren is a mentor to thousands of high achievers and business owners.  I listen to him on YouTube at least once a week and subscribe to his free “Darren Daily” conversations.  I recommend that you do the same.  You can find his daily insights and conversations at www.darrendaily.com and I recommend you start with his book, The Compound Effect.   It is a must read and he is a must-follow leader!

4.Andy Stanley

Andy is my pastor.  Kind of.  Like Michael Hyatt, I follow him almost daily but we’ve never met.  Actually, we have, but he would have no idea.  I met him at his church in Atlanta at a conference I attended and had him sign a book that he wrote.  So we’re like best friends now!

Please don’t make the mistake of not checking out Andy’s leadership podcasts just because he’s a pastor.  One of the things that I love about Andy is his ability to understand key issues that relate to so many of us:  vision, leadership, communication, influence, etc.  I cannot more highly recommend someone than him!  He has had more influence on me than almost anyone else in my life and I know his content would help you in your business and life as well.  You can find his leadership podcasts and teachings by going to www.northpoint.org.  You can find several of his books in my favorite books lists by clicking here.

5. Jon Acuff

Jon is hilarious.  If for no other reason (and there are many more reasons than just this!), Jon is worth following just to find a leader that makes you laugh and is helpful while being entertaining.

What I like so much about Jon is that he is someone who is fighting for his dream at the same time as you and I are.  Reading and listening to him is like following the leader who is learning and growing with you at the same, exact time.  He is challenging in a good way and causes you to consider your path carefully.  He makes sure that you push into what you really want from life and then motivates you to pursue it with all that you’ve got.  I highly recommend you check out his stuff.  The main way to stay in touch with him is through Twitter.  His Twitter handle is @jonacuff or you can find him at www.acuff.me.  Again, check out this page with some of his books, including a favorite of mine, Do Over.

Who do you follow?  I’d love to hear!  Please share 1 or 2 people you love to follow in the comments section below.

  1. Jon Gordon! Simple, impactful points that are easy to apply. All about positivity and purpose.
Erwin McManus! I am not a creative person, but he inspires me to try.
Keep up the great work, Nate!

    • Thanks for pointing me in the direction of Jon! He is a new favorite for sure. Like you, I don’t consider myself in the creative realm of Erwin, but love him and his heart. He inspires me too. Just like you, Steve! Thanks man!
